A private provider has recently been awarded NHS contract in Bolton to provide diabetic health services. This has included ‘controversial changes to diabetic screening’ according to Bolton News, causing concerns that the new provider will split up key parts of the service.
Previously, the patients would get their feet and eyes examined in the same appointment at Royal Bolton Hospital, where there were also specialists on site. Patients must now make separate appointments for these checks, meaning attendances may drop, putting patient safety at risk.
Sarah Price, part of Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership commented: “We are legally required to tender for services and following a fair and transparent process the service was awarded to Health Intelligence – who are specialists in the field and have significant experience in providing diabetic eye screening across the country.
“In Bolton the diabetic population are able to access the service by attending the three existing community sites. Health Intelligence are also planning to extend the service by offering additional optometrists venues.”
