The privatisation experiment

Over the last few years the NHS has been subjected to a huge experiment.  It created an unprecedented opportunity for profit-led companies and charities to bid to run virtually any kind of NHS service.

Competition and outsourcing were wired into the heart of the NHS as part of a huge re-organisation. It was hugely controversial at the time and since then we have been collecting evidence about the impact.

In fact there have been a number of different initiatives to involve the private sector over several decades, but all are connected by one the common claim by politicians that proposed them - that they will deliver substantial benefits to patients.

This website looks at the scope and the impact of these policies and put these claims to the test. Of course we cannot hide our own view, but we attempt to represent the counter view and use the evidence to make our analysis.
