The private hospitals handed the largest covid-19 contracts

A series of contract awards, which total £1.6 bn, published for the first time shows that Circle Health and Spire Healthcare were handed the largest contracts to provide extra staff and capacity to the NHS at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is unclear, however what period of time is covered by the contracts, so the amounts may represent a potential total which has yet to be reached.

Circle (which acquired BMI Healthcare last year) and Spire were each given contracts worth around £350m for services during the first wave. Ramsay Health Care, Nuffield Health, and HCA International were also given large contracts.
